Roofing in West Memphis

West Memphis is the largest city in Crittenden County and the Arkansas half of the Memphis metro, sitting directly across the river at the junction of Interstates 40 and 55. From our office in Whitehaven it is about fifteen minutes over the Hernando de Soto Bridge. The city's housing is older than the suburbs on the Tennessee and Mississippi sides: brick and frame homes from the 1950s through the 1980s in the neighborhoods off Broadway, Missouri Street and Avalon, with smaller pockets of newer construction toward the east. Most of these roofs are on their third or fourth generation, and a good number have been repaired past the point of sense.

The geography is the defining factor. West Memphis sits on the flat Delta floodplain with nothing between it and a storm coming out of Arkansas or up from the south. Straight-line wind that gets slowed by the hills and tree cover on the Tennessee side hits West Memphis at full strength, and hail that forms over the Delta lands here first. The city's roofs take more wind than any other part of our footprint, and wind-lifted, creased and torn shingles are the most common storm damage we see on this side of the river.

West Memphis is in Arkansas, with its own building codes, its own permit process through the city's Building department, and Arkansas's contractor regulations. We handle the West Memphis permit as part of every job there and keep to the local requirements on the Arkansas side of the river.

What we find on West Memphis roofs

The most common West Memphis job is wind damage. Tabs lifted and creased on the windward slope, ridge caps torn off, shingles peeled back in strips along the eaves. On a sound roof that is a repair; on the older roofs common here, a windstorm often exposes a roof that was already finished, and the honest answer is a replacement, with the storm-damaged portion claimed. Storm damage repair.

The second is the layered roof. Older West Memphis homes were often re-roofed by laying a second layer of shingle over the first, and some have three. That hides the decking, traps heat and moisture, and makes the tear-off bigger than expected. We look for it at the inspection and price the extra removal and any decking replacement up front. Roof replacement.

The third is water and structural damage that has been living in the house for years: a slow leak into a frame wall, rotted fascia behind an overflowing gutter, sagging floor joists over a damp crawl space. We repair the cause and restore the structure and interior under one claim where the damage is covered. Structural repair.
